Hello Troop 212,
At Monday night’s parents meeting, I mentioned the loss of some of our skilled team that support our annual Randsburg Firearms Safety Training event. For new parents, please note that this event is focused on firearm safety and accident prevention should our scouts stumble across an unattended firearm.
As most of you are aware, the Randsburg event is planned for October of this year so we do have some time to backfill skills. There are four areas I would like us to have some discipline/training and I have reached out to AllSafe to discuss some more details about what is required and when the classes are going to be held. Here is what I found out:
Experience Prerequisite: To attend the instructor courses, it is expected the participants know how to shoot and hit a target. There is no requirement for accuracy, but more a general firearms proficiency. There will be a basic qualifier to demonstrate this proficiency. In the course registration, you must attest to your completion of some basic courses. These can be checked as yes if you are proficient.
Special Classes: Can be accomplished but requires a minimum of 4 people. Typically this cannot be accomplished on the weekend as TJ (the instructor) has regularly scheduled classes every weekend. RSO is the easiest as it does not require range time.
At an absolute minimum, we need an RSO for the event, however, we should strive to have specific training for our three ranges. My goal is to find coverage for the following courses:
- Range Safety Officer
- Pistol Instructor
- Rifle Instructor
- Shotgun Instructor
Please reach out to me if you have an interest in any of these courses. If we have a large response, we may want to stagger our training by a year as these certifications are valid for 2 years. I appreciate your willingness to support our scouts and your dedication to running a safe training program.
Scouts and Scouters,
Reminders will be here for the time being. Please check back regularly so you don’t miss any information.
